Public Services Assistant I
Part time, 10-14 hrs/week. Some Wed evening and Sat morning shifts in rotation. Employee of City of
Avoca with vacation and IPERS benefits, Hourly salary $12.00 - $15.00 based on experience.
Background check required. This position reports to the Library Director.
Min. Requirements: High School graduate or equivalent. Experience working with children or libraries is
preferred. This position requires extensive use of common computer programs, including library
catalog/circulation software, a variety of internet browsers, Microsoft Office, and Google email. EOE
Nature of Work
Primary responsibilities of this position are under the general direction of the library director. Duties
include assisting all ages of patrons, manning the circulation desk, locating and shelving materials,
assisting with programs, and the general daily operation of the library. A full job description is available

Avoca, Iowa, population 1683, is seeking an insightful leader who will be a strategic thinker, with the ability to make sound decisions that are in the city’s best interest. The City Administrator should have knowledge with economic development and tax increment financing, long and short-term financial planning, including capital project and capital equipment planning experience; knowledge of planning and zoning, and building permits; personnel management; grant writing; and be an active and approachable representative in the community.
The City Administrator reports to the mayor and five-member council. Position open until filled. Avoca is a unique Main Street Community located in southwest Iowa, located between the Council Bluffs, Iowa and Des Moines, Iowa as well as the Omaha, Nebraska metropolitan areas. The annual operating budget is approximately $4.5 million. EOE
Required Education and Experience: Graduation from accredited four (4) year college or university with an emphasis in Business, Municipal, or Public Administration, Accounting, or a related field. Three (3) years of related experience and/or training in a municipality; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Avoca Public Library Staffing Announcements
After 15 years of service as the Library Director, Serena Riesgaard has announced her retirement effective May 31st. Serena stated," Our goal has been to provide the best personal service to our communities of the school district, rural Pott. County, and contracted cities of Hancock, Shelby and Neola. It's been a pleasure to serve with the awesome support of the Board of Trustees and the City Council and staff. I can't imagine having a more professional and dependable team of library staff to work with and I will definitely miss our daily camaraderie."
Kim Gress has served the library part-time for the past 26 years and will retire on May 31st.Kim states, "I've enjoyed working at the library and have seen so many changes over the years. I have worked with great people and have met so many wonderful people at the library." Kim will continue to be the City Clerk for Hancock.
Jeanette Bartunek has served our patrons part time as the Children's Program Librarian for over 13 years. She will be stepping down March 31st. Jeanette states, "I've really loved my time at the library and the opportunity to be part of such an extraordinary team. I know through our mission we've fostered not only a love of reading, but a love of the public library for patrons. While it's hard to leave the job I love so much, it's rewarding knowing that we've accomplished that."
